Real-Time Rendering in Scenography – Why Unreal Engine Is Replacing Pre-Rendered Animation

The traditional animation pipeline for the stage looks like this: you design a sequence, render it for hours or days, see the result at a rehearsal, and then — if the director wants a change — go back to square one and wait for the next render. Real-time rendering removes that waiting from the creative process. It's not just a faster render — it's a different way of designing.
How Real-Time Differs from Pre-Rendered Animation
Linear animation (so-called pre-rendered) is a video file — rendered once, ready to play, but rigid. Any change to the production's pacing, a scene's length, or the color of the light means going back to the render farm. A real-time environment, built in engines like Unreal Engine 5, works differently: the scene exists as a live 3D model, rendered on the fly, frame by frame, reacting to whatever is happening at that moment.
In practice, this means light, camera, animation pacing, or an object's behavior can be changed during rehearsal, with the result visible immediately — no hours spent waiting for a new render.
Where This Actually Matters in Theatrical Production
Real-time rendering delivers its biggest advantage where a production needs flexibility right up to the last rehearsal. "Rural Mapping" is built precisely on a real-time environment in Unreal Engine 5 — footage captured in natural settings across the Polish countryside goes through procedural processing that builds a consistent visual language, and the final mapped projection responds to the object's actual geometry rather than a rigidly rendered animation fixed once and for all.
The same logic underlies our XR productions — "Simple Songs About Death" is built in Unreal Engine 4.27, and "Promyk VR" in UE5 — in both cases, the environment has to respond to the user's movement and decisions in real time, which would simply be impossible with linear animation.
The same real-time engine also drives the stage projection in "Der Szturem. Cwiszyn" for the Jewish Theatre, Warsaw — photogrammetrically scanned tenement buildings from the Warsaw ghetto are rendered live in Unreal Engine 4.27, so the scene responds to the current lighting and camera setup instead of being a rigidly baked animation.
Three Practical Consequences for Productions
