VR Preview – How to See a Set Design at Full Scale Before It's Built

A 1:50 scale model and a technical drawing have been the standard language between set designer and director for decades. The problem is that neither answers the most important question: how the space will actually feel once a person is standing in it. Scale, proportion, distance — all of it gets lost in the jump from model to reality.

Why full scale changes design decisions

A VR model lets you literally walk into the designed space before a single physical element exists. The director and set designer can "walk through" the stage together, check the sightline from any seat in the house, judge whether a performer will fit between structural elements, and see whether light from a planned angle actually works the way the drawing assumed.

This is more than a visualisation — it's a spatial test that, in the traditional process, would only happen during the set build, at the exact point where a change costs the most.

How this works in our process

We use Unreal Engine 5 as a tool for prototyping spaces at full scale before physical construction begins. The stage model — with real proportions, materials, and lighting — reaches the client in a form they can experience through a VR headset, before the final decision on the scope of the build is made. The client isn't judging a render on a screen; they're literally standing in the designed space.

This is a methodology we apply consistently across our set design work — from intimate theatrical productions like "Wiera Gran", to projects with an extensive digital layer, like "Dus buch fyn Gan Ejdn" ("The Book of Paradise"), where virtual interpretations of King David's palace and abstract visions of paradise required precisely dialing in the proportions of the digital space against the physical stage of the Jewish Theatre, Warsaw.

Who this makes sense for

VR preview pays off most where a mistake at the build stage is costly or hard to reverse — large-scale stage productions, exhibition spaces built for a specific show, site-specific installations where there's no second chance to fix things after installation.

For smaller, more intimate productions, a VR model can be overkill — there, the decision can be made faster with a classic scale model and a working conversation.
